Sight Glass Assembly With Bulkhead Mounts
Instructions
Thank you for purchasing a BREWTREE Sight Glass with bulkhead mounts, sure to provide years of dedicated service. The following instructions are a necessity. If you fail to read these, the sight glass will break, voiding any warranty.
Included: (1) 16” Duron(pyrex) Sight Glass Tube ,Copper “blank” for hole alignment/mounting test purposes only. Two brass bulkhead mounts with (2)stainless screens and 2 red O-rings & 2 black sight glass gaskets.
To Install: The unit comes equipped with a copper “blank”. Use the blank instead of the glass tube before the final assembly is to be done. DO NOT TIGHTEN THE BRASS NUTS MORE THAN FINGER TIGHT. If you do, the compression rings will collapse on the copper tubing, and you will have to cut the copper tubing to remove the end nuts, thus ruining your blank.
DO NOT INSTALL THE SIGHT GLASS WITH THE COMPRESSION RINGS!!! THE SIGHT GLASS MUST ONLY BE HELD IN PLACE BY THE BLACK GASKETS. THE NUTS MUST BE FINGER TIGHT ONLY! The compression rings are for use with the blank ONLY.
Installation steps:
1. With the gasket removed from the bulkhead nut, place the bulkhead compression nuts on the blank, then the compression sleeve.
2. Install a bulkhead on each end of the copper blank by aligning the compression nut (blank) and compression threads(bulkhead), and screwing both together finger tight. Note, unit will easily fall apart if not careful.
3. Place assembly on kettle to be converted, align so that unit appears to be straight up and down, mark holes with a permanent marker, then remove blank assembly.
4. Cut holes using a dremel with a cutoff wheel, a hole saw, plasma cutter, step drill, etc… using extreme caution and following the tool manufacturers recommendations.
5. Deburr the hole, and clean up any sharp edges.
6. Check to see that blank bulkheads pass through the kettle wall.
7. Tighten the large brass nut against the washer and red gasket until a good seal is made. Make sure the large brass bulkhead nut (inside mount of bulkhead) is very tight so that bulkhead cannot swivel
8. NEVER LET THE SIGHT GLASS CONTACT METAL, IT WILL BREAK!!! IT IS GUARANTEED TO BREAK IF YOU LET IT CONTACT METAL EVEN ONCE!
9. Once entire assembly is mounted, remove the copper blank tube, remove the compression nuts, insert the black gasket into each nut, and hold gasket in nut while inserting sight glass tube. It may be easier to turn the glass tube while pushing the gasket against the compression nut, ensuring the gasket doesn’t get pushed outward and into the threads of the nut.
10. Push sight glass through gasket, so ¼” or so sticks out above the end of the compression nut.
11. Install into the bulkheads one at a time. TIP: It is easier to install one first, then push it into the bulkhead being EXTREMELY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH ANY METAL of the bulkhead. Then, with the other bulkhead turned 45 degrees or so, you can sometimes turn that bulkhead (to align with the bottom bulkhead) at the same time you insert the sight glass into the bulkhead, always being careful not to touch metal.
12. Once you have successfully installed the sight glass, tighten the nuts finger tight. Check for leaks at the beginning of your next brewing cycle, and tighten by hand if necessary.
13. The screens are provided as a safety measure in case the glass breaks. If the glass ever breaks, use common sense, stop brewing and clean all equipment until you are 100% positive there is no glass left in your brewing system.
14. Never expose glass to direct heat. Use a heat shield if flames are in a near vicinity, and make sure that ambient temperature does not rise above the sight glass maximum rated temperature (available online at the manufacturer’s website)
15. Have fun brewing, and enjoy your new sight glass!
